Types of music files: | Midi | Mod | Mp3 | Wave |
Quality | Terrible on sound cards with out wavetable (e.g. sound blaster and compatibles, SB16, SBpro.) Good on AWE32 and very good on AWE64. | Pretty good sound quality, although inferior to mp3's and wav's. | Near-cd at 128kbps bitrate, practically indistinguishable from cd at 256kbps, 44.1kHz sampling rate, when -hq switch used during encoding. | CD quality @ 44.1kHz, assuming perfect recording. |
Size | Very small; 5 to 200 kbytes. | 100 kbytes to 1 megabyte. | Depends on bitrate; around 5 meg for a 5 minute song @ 128kbps(wav file compressed 11 times), twice bigger @ 256kbps. | Same size as audio cd track, around 50 megs for 5 minutes song. |
Mainly used for: | In some games as a background music, not widely used anymore though. | In some games as a background music, also for creating songs on computers and distributing it over bbs's and Internet thanks to small size. | Pirating songs on the internet. | For audio editing. |
Pro's and Con's: | Small and sounds good on a sound card with wavetable. Unlistenable on a regular sound card. | Reasonably small, pretty good quality. Has to be composed with special programs called trackers, which are awkward and hard to use. Unfortunately, most mods pretty much suck. | Great sound quality, reasonable size and easy to encode from a cd. Illegal. | Exellent quality, few programs exist for editing and special effects. Too big for anything else. |
